The Local Initiative for Family and Education (“LIFE”) was launched in 2020 in cooperation with the STEP Africa leadership team and Gily’s Children Foundation. The aim of the initiative is to run a community centre in Mkonoo district, Arusha, which will become a meeting place for children, youth and families from the surrounding residential area. Mkonoo is a newer district in Arusha with a high rate of unemployment and single parents. The aim of the centre is to provide a variety of educational and care services to give children and young people a meaningful pastime and, above all, single mothers a perspective for the future. Offers for children with special needs are also planned.
The land for the community centre was acquired in 2021. After a lengthy approval process, construction could begin in 2022. So far, the foundation walls are in place, and the property could also be fenced off. We are currently looking for more donations to continue the construction. Volunteers with manual skills can contribute to this project in a diverse and creative way.
